The Balsam Lake District strives to effectively manage the invasive species present in our lake and prevent new introductions through ongoing management efforts, routine surveys, and educational campaigns. On this page you will find the invasive species reporting form, current maps with AIS locations on the lake, and educational information about invasive species present on Balsam Lake and those we are aiming to prevent.

Invasive species currently known to be present in Balsam Lake:
- Curly-Leaf Pondweed
- Eurasian watermilfoil
- Zebra Mussel
- Yellow Iris
- Purple Loosestrife
- Chinese Mystery Snail
- Japanese Knotweed
- Narrow-leaf Cattail
Invasive species NOT currently in Balsam Lake to be on the look out for:
- Spiny Water Flea
- Starry Stonewort
- Round Goby
- Red Swamp Crayfish
- Rusty Crayfish
If you think you have observed of these species not currently known in Balsam Lake please use the reporting form to the left. Any pictures or sample specimens you can collect would also be helpful.
Tips for collecting photos:
- Include the entire specimen in the photo
- Include close up photos of distinctive parts, i.e. flowers, leaves, fruits, markings on animals
- Include a size reference in photo (coins are good for this)
- Make sure the photo is in focus
Tips for collecting specimens:
- Try to collect several complete plant or animal specimens
- Place in a Ziploc bag with some lake water so the specimen does not dry out
- Label specimen bag clearly with date, location, and suspected species
- Place specimen in refrigerator until it can be sent to the appropriate recipient
